COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tallahassee Animal Services at Tom Brown Park cares for over 5,000 animals each year and works with the Animal Shelter Foundation to provide vital care, low cost spay and neuter services, and other support programs. Donations made today are matched dollar for dollar up to $40,075 to help give vulnerable pets a second chance at life.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • On December 1st, Big Bend Cares, a nonprofit offering health care and housing in the Big Bend, received a $5 million grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund—the largest private donation in its 40-year history. It will use the funds over the next five years to help families in shelters, hotels, cars, or outdoors move to stable housing and improved health.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Christmas Connection opened its doors on Sunday to give gifts, food and basic items to 500 families in seven Big Bend counties—half of whom will have their needs met by community donors while the rest shop at the warehouse. Run by Catholic Charities, the drive welcomes donations during set hours each week.  WCTV
  • Construction began at Champions Ranch on Dec. 1 in south Tallahassee after a ground-breaking ceremony led by Charlie and Tonja Ward and a festive performance by the Marching 100—fundraising has reached over $9 million toward a $20 million goal. The new facility will offer athletic, educational and enrichment programs for kids in the region.  WFSU Public Media

  • A Tallahassee construction worker detained in an immigration raid on Gaines Street for more than five months reunited with his family and said he is happy to be home—his return now brings relief and a fresh start.  WCTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Florida teacher unions have legally challenged a state rule that requires public college professors to post course syllabuses online—arguing that the vague regulation undermines academic freedom and widens agency power, while state officials say it promotes transparency for students.  Tallahassee Democrat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • James 'Tim' Moore, the longest-serving FDLE commissioner appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush, died at 74 on Nov. 26 after a lengthy career in Florida law enforcement—visitation is set for 11 a.m. Dec. 10 at Bradfordville First Baptist Church with a service at 1 p.m., and he is survived by his wife Mary Ann and other family members.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Leon County halted plans to develop 2000 acres north of Lake Jackson due to environmental concerns—Commissioner Rick Minor said county staff recommended connecting the sewer east of Meridian Road and officials will vote on these changes on December 9.  ABC 27
  • USPS officials say the service is ready for the busy holiday season after launching a Holiday Mail Counter that tracked over 3.1 billion pieces of mail as of 11:00 a.m. Dec. 1 — postmaster Vanessa Cobb said her team is set to deliver improved service after past delivery issues were addressed.  Tallahassee Democrat

  • Tallahassee organizations are reporting a surge in calls for housing help that is intensifying mental health struggles during the holidays. 211 Big Bend has seen more requests for rent support while Kearney Center has started after-hours mental health services to meet the growing need.  WCTV

SPORTS NEWS

  • FSU women's basketball lost to No. 8 Oklahoma—109—91 in the GEICO Coconut Hoops tournament final on Sunday night, setting a team record with 19 three-pointers. The Seminoles were outscored 66—49 in the second half, which sealed their loss against a top-ranked opponent.  Tallahassee Democrat
