COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Charlie Ward Champions Ranch groundbreaking ceremony was held Dec. 1—local leaders, including FAMU officials and the Florida A&M Marching 100, marked the start of the new project. CULTURE NEWS

  • Tickets will go on sale Friday, Dec.5 at 10 a.m. at TheAdderleyAmphitheater.com for Lake Street Dive’s spring concert set for April 2 at The Adderley Amphitheater in Cascades Park—gates open at 6 p.m. with showtime at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $99 for P1 Reserved, $88 for P2 Reserved and $64 for General Admission Lawn.  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College faculty unions challenged a state Department of Education rule that requires detailed course syllabi to be posted online at least 45 days before classes. They filed the administrative challenge last week after the State Board of Education approved the plan on Nov. 13 — union leaders say the rule oversteps legal authority and threatens academic freedom.  Tallahassee Reports
  • Tallahassee State College is working to fix three findings from its operational audit for 2024-25 after a report raised issues with bank reconciliations, tuition fee listings and reporting of instructional hours—TSC disagreed with a finding on property inventory, saying the audit was done before the inventory was completed.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Leon County Schools announced five finalists for its Teacher of the Year award — Kenneth Horne, Lois Sellers, Lorraine Thompson, Tara Williams, and Whitney Johnson — and the winner will be revealed Monday, December 8 to compete for the Florida Teacher of the Year title.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU student Colten Meier secured a finalist spot for the Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway with his video submission — he will compete at the SEC Championship Game for a chance to win free college tuition.  FSU News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State and local races for the 2026 midterms will include all Florida House seats and key state Senate contests along with Tallahassee mayoral and City Commission races featuring candidates like City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow, Daryl Parks, and Loranne Ausley — with issues such as small business support and affordable housing in focus. Students and residents are urged to update their voter registration and request mail-in ballots by Aug. 6 to ensure their voices are heard on Election Day Nov. 3.  FSU News

SPORTS NEWS

  • On November 22, Gulf Coast State College ended its volleyball season with a win in the third place game of the NJCAA Division II championship — the Lady Commodores finished with a 32 to 5 overall record. Leon High alum Keira Mathis earned Second Team All Sun Lakes Conference honors as a freshman and recorded 501 digs, playing a key role during the season.  Tallahassee Reports
  • FAMU football had three players earn All-SWAC honors when junior kicker Daniel Porto was named to the First Team and offensive lineman Ashton Grable + linebacker Jason Riles Jr. made the Second Team. The team ended its season with a 5-7 record, its first losing season since 2017.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FSU alumna and current Portland Thorns forward Deyna Castellanos balances her NWSL career and role as captain for Venezuela with her Queen Deyna Legacy Program, which has given over 50 students scholarship opportunities. Today, she will organize a youth tournament in Venezuela for sub-17 teams—providing donated equipment and on-site scouting to identify future scholarship prospects.  FSU News
  • Florida High will host the 8th Cam Brown Seminole Classic this weekend in honor of Cam Brown—a former standout football player and wrestler who passed away after a bone cancer diagnosis. Twelve teams will compete over two days, and two graduating seniors will each receive a $500 scholarship.  WCTV
  • Deyna Castellanos, the FSU star — who now leads Venezuela's national team and plays for the Portland Thorns — runs the Queen Deyna Legacy Program that has helped over 50 students earn college scholarships. She will host a youth tournament today in Venezuela to scout under-17 players and expand her program.  FSU News
