COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Legal Aid Foundation’s Mobile Law Clinic provides free legal counseling for family law and landlord tenant issues in Leon County Promise Zones. The monthly pop-up service (available for residents with low incomes) will be held next at the Jack McLean Community Center on Jan. 7.  ABC 27
  • The Christmas Connection Blanket Days drive will collect blankets, comforters & heaters at the old Macy's at Governor’s Square on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7 between 1 and 5 p.m. New donations will be accepted through Dec. 8 for families in need.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • At its record 8th Anniversary Party on Nov. 21 at Sienna Lee Gardens Organic Blueberry Farm, the TLH Beer Society donated $11K to the Leon County Humane Society through membership card sales and previewed a Nintendo GameBoy-inspired design for next year's card, combining craft breweries and community celebration.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • The Less Fortunate Still Matters Foundation will host its 12th annual toy giveaway on Dec. 14 at Jean Cox Stadium—an event offering free toys for children. Donations are accepted until Dec. 10 at several drop off sites as the group aims to top last year's count of 4,800 toys.  ABC 27

  • Dollar General debuts its new DG Market at 3970 Fred George Road on Saturday, Dec. 13. The store will feature fresh meats, fruits, and vegetables and hosts a grand opening event with gift cards and tote bags for early guests.  Tallahassee Democrat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tallahassee is hosting a series of weekend holiday events from (Dec. 5-7) featuring the 39th Annual Winter Festival with music, food, and a parade to Market Days and community concerts downtown (Railroad Square and surrounding areas).  Tallahassee Democrat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FSU has updated its amnesty policy to let students help peers in emergencies without facing disciplinary action if they call FSUPD (or 9-1-1), remain with the person until help arrives, and share needed details. The policy applies only to student conduct and housing matters.  FSU News
  • Florida A&M trustees expressed concern over a drop in alumni giving—from over $25 million in the 2024–25 fiscal year to less than $20 million so far—at a campus meeting on Dec. 4. They will hold a Zoom meeting on Dec. 17/18 to discuss the new president’s fundraising goals.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University President Richard McCullough delivered the State of the University Address on Wednesday, Dec. 3 & outlined the institution’s progress and upcoming priorities at the main auditorium.  Tallahassee Democrat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Jackson in north-central Leon County dried up on Dec. 4 due to an ongoing drought that exposed its sinkholes and underground caves. Locals along U.S. 27 noticed the rare phenomenon as county officials review its long-term impact.  Tallahassee Democrat

SPORTS NEWS

  • FAMU volleyball will face the Texas Longhorns in the NCAA Tournament first round today at 8 p.m. at Gregory Gymnasium in Austin following a SWAC Tournament win + fans can watch on ESPN+.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • FAMU men's basketball is competing in the inaugural HBCU Hoops Invitational at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando with an opening game against Barber-Scotia College at 5 p.m. today — the four-team tournament continues through Saturday.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State soccer has rallied with a formation switch that fueled a six-game winning streak and now faces TCU in the College Cup semifinals today at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Today, Tallahassee State College basketball begins the 23rd annual Florida Shootout at the Bill Hebrock Eagledome — it faces Hillsborough at 5 p.m. while 14 teams compete through Dec. 7 with games streamed online.  Tallahassee Democrat
