- ➤ Bob Lotane, a longtime political and communications consultant active in local civic life, died on Dec. 5 after a stroke at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. Many remember him for his kind spirit — a loss felt across town. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Tallahassee's 39th annual Winter Festival and holiday parade will take place today from 3 to 10 p.m. despite a 60% to 80% chance of rain, with a day-of decision by Mayor Dailey. The event features live entertainment, food vendors & a special guest for the Jingle Bell Run. Tallahassee Democrat
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Tallahassee State College held its commencement ceremony on Thursday as 2,348 graduates walked the stage to receive their diplomas. WCTV
- ➤ Leon County Schools plans to introduce a new attendance policy that refers students with 5 unexcused absences in a month or 10 in 90 days to a child study team (virtual meetings allowed) and requires reporting uncooperative cases to law enforcement after 15 days. WCTV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Florida Department of Health data shows 36 leprosy cases have been recorded this year & most were acquired in state, including a recent case in Leon County. The illness is curable with antibiotics and does not spread easily. Tallahassee Democrat
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ FSU coach Mike Norvell will address the media at noon today to discuss his 32-player signing day class and staff changes, including the departure of defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain. Coordinators Tony White and Gus Malzahn are expected to remain with the program. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Florida State's women's soccer team faced TCU in a College Cup semifinal Friday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. ET on ESPNU from CPKC Stadium in Kansas City. The Seminoles, 14-2-4, returned to postseason play after beating Ohio State while TCU advanced via penalty kicks against North Carolina. Tallahassee Democrat
- ➤ Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos was denied a fifth year by the NCAA on Dec. 5 and is appealing the decision—his attorney explained that he only exceeded the participation threshold by one postseason game, a rule later changed to excuse similar cases. Tallahassee Democrat
