- ➤ The Tallahassee Branch NAACP and the Tallahassee-Leon County Council on Culture and Arts unveiled the Legacy in Motion mural on West Brevard Street on Saturday — the artwork honors civil rights leaders like Reverend C.K. Steele, Anita L. Davis and Reverend William H. Gray Jr. ABC 27
- ➤ The FAMU Marching 100 lost the HBCU Band of the Year national contest on Dec. 12 in Atlanta to Southern University. The 340-member band honored late member Caleb Wilson during performances that aligned with its fall commencement, marking its largest roster in 15 years + a tribute to its legacy. - ➤ Leon County School District is leasing unused school space for Head Start starting in January. Brooke Brunner said at the Dec. 8 board meeting that Pineview, Hartsfield Elementary with 3 classrooms + an office, and Sabal Palm will host the program with more spaces planned for 2026. - ➤ Federal scientists confirmed La Niña will shape weather this winter, bringing warmer and drier conditions to our area. The pattern started in October and is forecast to shift to neutral between January and March while a brief cold blast is expected next week + ongoing drought may raise fire risks. - ➤ Florida health officials proposed eliminating certain school vaccine mandates at a workshop (in Panama City Beach) on Friday, Dec. 12, despite strong opposition from doctors and educators. They will accept public comments until Monday, Dec. 22. CBS News

- ➤ Florida State men's basketball fell to UMass 103-95 on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the AutoNation Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, marking their fourth straight loss. FSU will face Dayton next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at University of Dayton Arena to try to bounce back. Tallahassee Democrat

- ➤ Leon County will host the World Athletics Cross Country Championships at Apalachee Regional Park on Jan. 10.
