COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A report from Allstate released on Dec. 18 showed Tallahassee drivers ranked 5th riskiest for winter driving using collision claim data from November to March+ similar data noted higher risk in cities like Gainesville.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Elf Night was held Thursday, Dec. 18 at Dorothy B. Oven Park where Santa and Mrs. Claus made appearances and free hot cocoa and cookies were offered; heavy traffic on Thomasville Road led drivers to use alternate routes — parking was available at Thomasville Road Baptist Church.  WFSU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FAMU president Marva Johnson on Dec. 18 named alumna Brandi Tatum-Fedrick as permanent VP + executive director of the FAMU Foundation after serving as interim since August. She will lead new strategies to boost alumni giving.  Tallahassee Democrat
  • Florida State University finished 2025 with its highest-ever national ranking, record graduation rates and expanded research funding. The university will hold a public ribbon-cutting for Legacy Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 6 while beginning plans for an academic health center with Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.  Florida State University
  • FSU’s Master’s of Science in Applied Economics program joined the National Association for Business Economics partner program — allowing students to earn the Certified Business Economist certification with their degree. The STEM-designated program prepares graduates for careers in government and the private sector.  Florida State University
  • Florida State University College of Nursing Dean Jing Wang was awarded the Fellowship Ad Eundem by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland for her leadership in digital health and workforce innovation — she was formally conferred the honor in Dublin in December 2025.  Florida State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A statewide black bear hunt began on Dec. 6 and is underway after a judge denied an injunction. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials approved 172 permits to manage the bear population while conservation groups say kill data remains undisclosed.  ABC 27
  • Wakulla County's Gulf Specimen Marine Lab is seeking extra space & equipment to treat sea turtles with fibropapillomatosis as it plans to expand its care soon.  WCTV
